Why I Started Using The Infrared Sauna For Weight Loss (and detox)

If you were to ask me why I started using the infrared sauna for weight loss and detox, my most truthful answer would be because I’m very competitive.  But seriously, my road to the infrared sauna is much longer and more complicated than that. In fact, it took me years to decide to give the infrared sauna a fair chance.

My Dr. Recommended the Infrared Sauna

Have you ever had a Dr. who helped your family’s health so much that you respected them and their advice to the point you didn’t even feel the need to question him or google his advice?  Dr.  Rudy Byron is that and more to our family.

A few years ago, I was casually talking to Dr. B about my crazy health history including PCOS, weight loss resistance, adrenal fatigue, leaky gut, and the MTHFR gene mutation and did I mention my inability to lose weight?

Dr. Byron quickly responded with,  “You need to try the infrared sauna to help you detox”. Well, my life was pretty C-R-A-Z-Y at that time and I am sad to say I didn’t listen to my brilliant doctor’s advice.

And Then I Got Hooked on JJ Virgin and Listened to JUST About Everything She Said

In case you are not familiar with JJ Virgin, she is a Certified Nutrition Specialist, a Certified Health and Fitness Instructor with advanced certifications in nutrition, personal training and aging, and a Board Certified Holistic Nutritionist.  She is also the best selling author of The Virgin Diet, Sugar Impact, and Warrior Mom.

And if all of that isn’t impressive enough, have you seen her arms?  If not, you may be able to find a picture of them on my vision board :).

Anyways, JJ also has fantastically informative Facebook lives that I L-O-V-E and have faithfully listened to for years.  She has recommended infrared saunas more times than I can remember throughout the years and often talks about how she saunas daily herself.   Did I take JJ’s not so subtle hints about the benefits of infrared saunas…… N-0.

And Then The Renowned Robinhood Integrative Clinic (Home of Dr. Wiggy) Offered Me A Sauna With My Doctor’s Appointment

I’m also a big Dr. Wiggy fan and love his blog Health As It Ought To Be.  When I realized his clinic was in a semi- drivable distance, I couldn’t resist making appointments for my son and me.

And of course, I liked the clinic on Facebook and came across a post from January of 2019 saying:

Regular infrared sauna use has a multitude of health benefits, it helps detox the body, balances cortisol which is our body’s stress hormone, relieves pain, improves circulation, and helps with weight loss. An interesting side note, a 30-minute infrared sauna has been shown to burn around 600 calories!

And even with that being read, I declined an infrared sauna appointment before my doctor’s appointment when the clinic receptionist offered it to me!  Seriously, what was I thinking?

And Then I Finally Tried The Infrared Sauna At a Holistic Day Spa

A while ago, I hit a weight loss plateau where I not only wasn’t losing weight but I was gaining weight while being very faithful to my diet.  The worse part is I felt very bloated and the skin on my legs felt so tight, it felt like my legs were going to explode.  Have you ever felt like that?  It is not comfortable – at all.

Luckily, I had just befriended the owner of a holistic day spa who basically exuded health.  She radiated energy and looked about 1/2 her age – seriously.  All I could think of when I was around her is, I’ll take one of what she’s having.

Anyways, my new friend suggested I come in for an infrared sauna appointment.  I was so uncomfortable,  I had to do something, so I finally decided to take the advice of  Dr. Byron, JJ Virgin, Dr. Wiggy,  and the beautiful exuberant day spa owner and I tried the infrared sauna.

I Finally Tried The Infrared Sauna and This is What Happened….

And, as I blogged about in The Holistic Emergency Tune-Up For Inflammation, It worked!  My inflammation reduced substantially and I lost 2 pounds the next day.  But for some reason, I didn’t go back to the infrared sauna for a very long time.

And This Is Where My Competitiveness Comes In Handy

I love a good detox because I believe releasing toxins is vital to health and weight loss.  A friend of mine invited me to be part of a detox group and I couldn’t resist, so I joined.  The group leader suggested the detox group members take in a few infrared sauna sessions a week to help us release toxins.  Well, I am not proud to admit, that I visited the sauna a few times a week because I wanted to be sure I got better detox results than the other group members.  – ugh.  Yes, I’m that competitive.

Anyway,  I learned a lot in that time.  I learned to enjoy my time in the infrared sauna which is huge for a type a personality who doesn’t like to sit still or sweat.   I saw and felt positive things happening in and after every sauna session. Like many others with the MTHFR gene mutation, I all but never sweat and my body learned to sweat in the infrared sauna.  My skin glistened after every session and I noticed an improvement in my potty habits almost immediately.  I also came out of my sauna sessions relaxed and with a new improved mood.  It quickly became obvious that the more often I went, the more beneficial the sauna sessions were.

And Then I Finally Got Hooked On The Infrared Sauna

I was hooked on the sauna.  So hooked that I purchased an infrared sauna for my family!
