Are You or Someone You Love Gluten Intolerant?

I was in my late thirties and under tremendous stress.  My Dad had just passed, we relocated cross country, and my son was newly diagnosed with Autism when my body seemed to literally short wire on me.  I went to the doctors several times and they ran many tests, but they couldn’t seem to find a single thing that could help me.  Who would have ever thought this could have all been happening because I was gluten intolerant?

A few of my symptoms

I suffered from debilitating migraines, horrendous acid reflux, brain fog, and severe arthritis pain in my neck, back, knees, and hands.  I experienced random hot and cold flashes and dizzy spells throughout the day and had strange bumps on my arms that looked like pimples.  Of all the symptoms, the extreme exhaustion was the least bearable, because I could barely endure a day of being a mom. I had pretty much accepted all of this as my new norm.  After all, my doctor seemed to have a permanent diagnosis for each one of the symptoms.

I should have known I was gluten intolerant way back when…

Thinking back, these symptoms started when I was in my teens.  I remember being very self-conscious about wearing my strapless prom dress because of my chicken skin and bumps on my arms.  I recall having a bottle of Maalox on my desk at work and doing a shot of it before I had to speak with someone, so the pain in my throat would temporarily subside and I could focus on the conversation.  Interestingly, I seemed to feel my best when I was on a high protein diet and I have a sneaking suspicion it wasn’t because of the high protein but because of the lack of carbs which meant very low to no gluten.

How I found out I was gluten intolerant

It was really a crazy set of circumstances that led me to discover I was gluten intolerant.   My then four-year-old son had just started seeing a new naturopathic doctor, Dr. Sarah Axtell who authored Ditch the Wheat, Drop the Weight and needed to have some blood work done.   He was afraid and refusing to allow the technician to take the draw, so I asked the clinician to draw my blood for the same panel.  Luckily, the clinician was very accommodating, quickly got a set of orders from the doctor, and took both Drew’s and my blood.  Even more luckily, they happened to be testing for food intolerances that day.  A few days later the doctor called and told me even though my son was showing some significant health concerns, she was more worried about my results.  I tested such a high gluten intolerance that she recommended I never eat it again.

Results of Going Gluten-Free

Today, roughly three years after going gluten-free, I am symptom-free of the above, more than 95 percent of the time.  That means I no longer suffer from debilitating migraines, horrendous acid reflux, brain fog, dizzy spells, hot and cold flashes, fatigue, and severe arthritis pain in my neck, back, knees, and hands!  Wow!  It is amazing to think of the havoc gluten can put on your body!

And, it’s not just me, several of Weight-Loss-Confessions followers have reached out to share their personal gluten intolerance stories with me and the internet is flooded with gluten-free success stories.  Here are a few great ones.  Check them out if you have a moment:  Gluten Spinner’s My Story of Gluten Intolerance and The Curious Coconut’s My Experience with Gluten Sensitivity.

How to find out if you are gluten intolerant

Most physicians are able to run a quick blood test for gluten intolerance.  Having said that, I have been told by multiple doctors, the best test is an elimination diet.  If you are experiencing symptoms of gluten intolerance, Healthline’s article, How to do an Elimination Diet and Why suggests taking the food group out of your diet for 2-3 weeks and slowly reintroducing it.  If you are intolerant of the food, you should see a reaction when you reintroduce it.  Both the JJ Virgin diet and The Whole30 are popular diets that eliminate foods that commonly trigger adverse effects and can be a great starting point if you feel something you are eating may not be bringing out the best in you.

My best advice for going gluten-free

My best advice for going gluten-free is don’t do it as I did – seriously.  I told my story in  The Gluten-Free Diet Caused Me to Gain Weight!  and you don’t want to replicate it.   Take going gluten-free as a chance to focus on introducing more healthy unprocessed foods into your diet, don’t go out foraging for new processed foods that have the GF symbol on them.

Update as of April of 2021

This article was originally written in August of 2018. Fast forward to April of 2021.  I have remained gluten-free and continue to live free of all of the symptoms I experienced prior to going gluten-free.  I am now a health coach and help many of my clients move to a healthy gluten-free lifestyle.  It is amazing to watch their health transform for the better.  Many of my clients have enjoyed less inflammation, pain, headaches, joint pain, and brain fog and the list goes on.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions or I can help.  I love to help people get healthy!

Cheers!

Monday Morning Weight Loss Tune- Up

As I approach the scale, I realize it is my last Monday Morning Weight Loss Tune Up as a high protein low carb moderate fat dieter.  To celebrate, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge a few non-scale victories before I get on the scale.

Non-Scale Victories

A memory from last night bubbles up.  I was in the bathroom getting ready for my Epson and lavender essential oil bath when I realized I still had my jewelry and good sports bra on.  My fifteen-year-old daughter Taylor was laying in my bed sick with the flu.  I really didn’t want to have to walk past her without clothes on but the Superfreak in me couldn’t get into the tub without putting my jewelry and bra in its proper place, so I did it.  I walked across my bedroom without my shirt on hoping she was sleeping.  Within 30 seconds I heard her say those magical words, “Wow, Mom you have lost a lot of weight”.

Several days ago, I was in a huge hurry to meet friends for a lunch date.  I picked a pair of pants up to put on that I was all but certain didn’t fit me and I shimmied them on with no problem.  I didn’t even have to lay on the bed!

Non- Scale Victories

So, filled with confidence from those two scenarios, I stepped on the scale to find it was stuck – again.  I really hadn’t lost any weight this week, in fact, I gained a few ounces.

I look at my weight history that is clearly charted out on myfitnesspal and wonder why I seem to be stuck.  It could be that I have been eating foods I know I am intolerant to such as gluten and dairy or it could be the artificial sweeteners that I am all but certain are causing inflammation.  I stopped eating gluten almost a week ago and gave up artificial sweeteners at 5:59 this AM.  As for my dairy, this Wisconsin girl will most likely be eating her cheese until 11:59 PM on August 31st– the Eve of the Whole 30 start.

Another possibility comes to mind.  Yesterday I reached out to a blogger, Conner Middelmann, because I enjoyed one of her blogs about artificial sugar: https://bit.ly/2Nh2LdQ.  Conner shared the work of a Canadian nephrologist who authored the Obesity Code with me.  Dr. Fund points out that eating high amounts of protein raises insulin levels, which in turn blocks fat burning and may contribute to weight gain.  He believes this is why people on high-protein diets often hit plateaus similar to those on low-calorie diets.  Check out: https://bit.ly/2wv2zk6

Well, regardless if the culprit is gluten, dairy, aspartame, or too much protein, it seems I am on the right track with starting the Whole 30 September 1st.

Let’s take a week at last week’s tune up read the post now!

I quickly review last week’s goals.

Went back to the ketosis basics for 4 days – check

Walked everyday but for 30-45 minutes, not 60 minutes

Practiced yoga once – check

Refrained from alcohol -check

The inner sales manager in me starts to coach and suggests I:

Continue to eat 900 calories of protein, two servings of fruit or vegetables and two servings of fat this week

Walk everyday and try to get my time up to 60 minutes a day

Practice yoga twice this week

Diligently prepare for the Whole 30. You can check out my Pinterest Whole 30 recipe board:  https://bit.ly/2BOjy6D and the suggested supplements athttps://bit.ly/2P72NW8

Lift weights 1-2 times this week

And, allow myself to have a cocktail or two before starting the Whole 30

Sounds like a thorough tune up to me.  How about you?  What are your goals for this week?

Cheers!

Tanya

Are Your Fitness & Weight Loss Goals Bigger Than Your Excuses?

I awoke around 7 AM with the same splitting headache I had last night and started to make my way towards the scale but stopped mid-route and took a moment for gratitude.  I need to thank you for reading my blogs and all the support you have shown throughout this journey.  The Facebook messages, blog messages, texts, and emails have all been amazing.  Since I am working towards growing my followers, I appreciate every single time you have shared my blog or my page and every time you will hit share in the future.

When I made it to the bathroom I hit the play button on my playlist so I could dance around while I dry brushed myself and guess what song came on?  Super Freak by Rick James.  My playlist knows me well.

I stepped up to the almighty scale, not sure of the outcome.  We went out for a late hibachi dinner last night to celebrate my Son’s therapist going away to college.  I feel I made healthy choices but eating after 7 is always a dangerous thing for my weight loss. I had my absolute favorite Caulipower pizza for lunch and the carb count in it is a little higher than I normally eat, so who knows…..

Gluten Induced Headaches

I didn’t get much exercise in during the day because I had a splitting headache.   In all honesty, I’ve been getting more headaches since I’ve been on the clinic’s diet and I’m all but positive I know why.  For several years I suffered from debilitating migraines.  On a whim, I tested for food intolerances and found out I was severely intolerant to gluten.  Within days of going gluten-free, my migraines were completely gone! Although I try to avoid it, the clinic’s diet includes some gluten and the headaches are coming back. So, if I move on to another diet that doesn’t include gluten, would you really consider me a cheater?

Fitness & Weight Loss Goals Bigger Than Your Excuses

I did get a mini work out in last night when I got home from dinner.  The inner Super Freak in me surfaced and I just couldn’t go to bed without exercising so I ran up and down the hallways in my house and lifted weights for a few minutes.  The look on my Husband, Tony’s, face when I do things like this is priceless.  “Wow, I don’t know how you could do that with the headache you have had all day”, Tony said questioningly.  My head was throbbing too hard for me to respond with the typical flirtatious response, so I quickly borrowed a quote from my fitness enthusiast friend, Kimberly Sanderson, “ My goals are bigger than my excuses”.  You can check Kimberly out on Instagram.

I stepped on the almighty scale.  Down 6 ounces since yesterday.  Life is good!

How about your life? How do your goals measure up to your excuses?
