“The food you eat either makes you more healthy or less healthy. Those are the options.” – Melissa Hartwig
Have you ever been in a store and saw something you just had to have even though you didn’t need it and there is no logical reason you would want it? I was perusing the book section of Target when I locked eyes with the book, The Whole Thirty Day by Day. I picked it up and scanned over it for a good five minutes. It literally took everything I had to put it back on the shelf. Why would I want this book so badly?
About a year ago, my then fourteen-year-old daughter came home and announced to our family that she was going to do the Whole30. I had just gone back to work at more than a full-time job after staying home for years and was completely overwhelmed with life.
Taylor presented the facts she researched with enthusiasm and had taken the initiative to purchase the Whole30 book with her own money. Taylor didn’t want to lose weight she just wanted to be healthier. Before I knew what I was saying, I responded with the only words I had the energy to give, “That’s fine, but you are on your own. I can’t be responsible for making all that food”.
My determined teenage daughter made it fourteen days before she fell off the Whole30 wagon.
I feel like I should have interrupted that paragraph with a few confessions. If confession would have wiped the slate clean I would have gone a long time ago. Unfortunately, there isn’t much I can do to undo that conversation. How could I tell my daughter I wasn’t going to support her efforts to eat healthier?

As we walked out of Target and drove home, I asked Taylor, a few questions about the Whole 30. What did she like about it? What didn’t she like about it and why did she quit? Her answers were brief, and we didn’t get into much detail.
Later in the day, she came into my office while I was writing and sat across from me with her hands under her legs and two books on her lap. “Mom, I think the Whole 30 is really cool and I would really like to pull it off sometime”. And then she went on to confess, “I think it was me. I think I overcomplicated things. The Whole 30 is kind of a lot but I think it would have worked if I just took it one day at a time”.
Do you ever wonder if your children were given to you to teach you more than you will ever teach them? This was one of those moments for me.
I went back to Target and bought two copies of The Whole Thirty Day by Day. When my little girl gets home from school she will find one copy on her bed with a note from me.

Would love to have you join us on our weight loss and health journey. We will be blogging our way through the Whole 30 so subscribe to the blog and stay tuned!
